Urinetown the Musical

Urinetown, The Musical 2007

Direction by Gary Grant
Choreography by Dustyn Martincich
Costume Design by Paula D. Davis

This satirically funny musical was our first musical since I joined the faculty at Bucknell University. It was also our first musical with our dream team of Gary’s direction and Dustyn’s choreography. We closely examined character, period, and the musical theatre quotes found within this show. I was inspired especially by expressionism and surrealism in fashion. I made the rich female character’s dresses in rich jewel tones and then created Schiaparelli inspired exaggerated padded style lines and hats to heighten the reality of this play. I had a student who was a brilliant hatmaker and so I charged him with creating asymmetrical oversized cop hats for our chorus of tap dancing cops. The tap dancing cops were then accessorized with sequin ties and high waisted trousers. Over spring break I scoured a flea market in Budapest, Hungary and found communist era coats, hats, and medals for Officers Lockstock and Barrel. For the poor we looked especially at images of the 1930s depression by Dorothea Lange. Little Sally was a Raggedy Ann come to life and we dressed her little Raggedy Ann just like her. But I think my favorite was the bunny ears.

Spring Awakening

Spring Awakening 2006

Directed by Robert Gainer
Costume Design by Paula D. Davis

The same year that the hit musical adaptation of Spring Awakening opened we had already selected the original play by Frank Wedekind for our 2006/2007 season. The play about teenage sexuality and repression certainly resonated with our students and our audiences.

It was a delight to work on this classic Sam Shepard play with our resident Shepard expert, Professor Grant, and the seniors who not only performed in the play but also did additional work on Sam Shepard as part of an independent study. We even took this play to the regional ACTFKC on Pittsburgh that year. As a Californian, I wanted this play to resonate with style in Southern California and also demonstrate the extreme clash between these very different human beings.

I provided the director and cast with these costume lists to help them as they developed their characters:

Life as a Ball

Life as a Ball 2008

Written and Performed by Anastasia Peterson ’08
Costume Design by Paula D. Davis

Senior Stacey Peterson had been obsessed with Lucille Ball since a child and this had played a large role in her desire to perform. So for her senior project she wrote and performed this one-woman love story to Lucille Ball in which she explored key parts of her life both public such as the famous “Vitameatavegamin” skit from I Love Lucy to more private and painful biographical moments. I had a Lucille Ball coloring book with some of her signature outfits and from this we created several looks, notably the lovely black and white houndstooth dress complete with asymmetrical peplum and curved welt pockets. The costume plot is revealing for this quick paced show as Stacey went from look to look.

Five Women Wearing the Same Dress

Five Women Wearing the Same Dress 2009

Directed by Anjalee Deshpande Hutchinson
Costume Design by Paula D. Davis

For this production we looked at Southern style weddings. We wanted slightly over the top dresses, hats, and gloves to give the actors lots to fuss with and complain about. And pink worked out great for the color. I was also able to utilize students as cutter/drapers for each dress. I liked this aspect as it gave each dress just a slightly different cut and feel that helped to support differences in the characters.
